Less than a day before the expected announcement of the new iPhones, the Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint plans to 'bet the company' on the iPhone and will purchase at least 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years, which amounts to about US$20 billion.
Sprint would subsidize each phone for about $500. The move isn't expected to generate any sort of profit until 2014. The WSJ's source tells the paper that "the projected hit to the company's operating income is 'staggering,' " but it's expected to halt the company's sales losses to Verizon and AT&T as Sprint's customers seek out the iPhone.
By this time, the iPhone going to the Sprint is a rumor that appears to have the Magic 8-Ball pointing to "yes." In mid-September, a Sprint Nextel associate told TUAW that the carrier began briefing its employees for an October launch, and Sprint restricted its mobile-tethering plans to 5 GB as of Oct. 2.
Tune into TUAW's coverage of Apple's iPhone event tomorrow with a liveblog hosted by the lovely Erica Sadun starting at 9:45 a.m. PDT (12:45 p.m. EDT.)

Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg talked with the Wall Street Journal about the company's mobile phone strategy. During the interview, the CEO confirmed that Sony Ericsson should have taken the iPhone more seriously when it launched.
Nordberg doesn't elaborate on this comment, but it likely refers to the company's slow transition from a feature phone manufacturer with Symbian as its primary OS to a smartphone manufacturer that's placing all its eggs in the Android basket.
This move cost Sony Ericsson. Instead of being the leader of the pack, Sony Ericsson is losing precious market share. According to Gartner, Sony Ericsson had a 4.3% share of the global mobile phone market in Q3 2009 and dropped to a lowly 1.7% in the second quarter of 2011.
During that same period, Apple grew from an insignificant level in 2009 to 4.6% in Q2 2011. This is an astounding jump for a company that sells only the iPhone and not an entire lineup of smartphones and feature phones.

I had a couple SE phones. They were the best at the time with a huge cult following. However, SE, screwed up long before the iPhone. Many US carriers dropped the best SE phones and people started jumping to Blackberry phones the RAZR and its offshoots. By the time that the iPhone arrived on the scene, SE was effectively a dead man walking.

The iPod nano uses the attached cord as its antenna, allowing it to pick up radio signals. Say you want to dock the nano and play its radio back on speakers? You'll still need to attach a cord of some kind to the earplug jack. A standard 3.5mm audio cable will do the job for you. Look for one that's at least 8-inches long.

We are still not sure whether next generation iPhone would be called as iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 or both yet. According to 9to5mac, they said the iPhone 4S would provide 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage option.
Currently, we only have 16GB and 32GB to choose for the iPhone 4. However, the iPad has already provided 16GB, 32GB and 64GB for a while. Hence, this sounds logical for future iPhone to provide the 64GB version.

Remember all that iPhone tracking hubbub back in April? Sure you do -- you probably also recall Apple's denial, the subsequent Senate hearing, and the rest of the fiasco's dramatic fallout. Amid the ballyhoo, Microsoft stepped out to admit that its Windows Phone also collected location data, but quickly promised to knock it off following the next scheduled update. According to ChevronWP7 collaborator Rafael Rivera, Windows Phone 7.5 cinches it: Mango "no longer sends location data prior to being granted permission to do so." Redmond previously told the US House of Representatives that it only collected location data if a user expressly allowed an application to send it along -- a claim which Rivera debunked last week, noting that simply launching the camera application captured and transmitted "pin-point accurate positioning information." The big M maintains that the collected location data was anonymous, and that it shouldn't have been sent at all unless the user allowed it. Either way, Microsoft's chapter in the big location tracking blunder of 2011 seems to be at a close, squaring the firm with Congress, its developers, and hopefully its customers.

Falling into the realm of super-protective cases, Luxa2's H10 Bike Mount for iPhone 3G/3GS + iPhone 4 ($49) is made to accompany you through rough terrain on a bike or on foot. It has a multilayer design, with a rubber inner lining that's removable -- one lining for each style of supported iPhone -- that fits inside a hard plastic case. At the top is a hinge, attached to the front cover. When folded down, the two halves clip together along either side. A permanent screen protector prevents scratches on the multi-touch display, while rubber Home, volume, and Sleep/Wake button covers protect those portions of the iPhone. There's even a flip-open headphone port protector; the Dock Connector is completely blocked off. Two different style clips, each of which fits into the back of the case, are included. One is made to mount on a bike's handlebars, while the other is a standard alligator clip for hooking onto your clothing or belt.

Tip Us Tim Cook's "time to shine" with new iPhone announcement by Kelly Hodgkins Oct 3rd 2011 at 1:30PM
Tomorrow is a big day for Apple fans around the world, it's also a big day for Apple CEO Tim Cook. Cook is expected to introduce the next generation iPhone. Apple's first high-profile announcement since WWDC and Cook's first as CEO.
Cook is highly regarded as an expert in operations and supply chain management. He is given credit as the man who secured an ample and inexpensive supply of internal components for the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
Tomorrow will be a test of whether he can move beyond that role and deliver a dynamic and exciting keynote. Cook will likely be joined by Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall, but Steve Jobs is not expected to make an appearance. Nervousness aside, Cook should do a fine job introducing one of the most highly anticipated products of 2011.
All of us at TUAW will be following the keynote and meta live-blogging it. Won't you join us?

Best of luck to Tim. He's got some big shoes to fill after Steve Jobs there's no doubt about it but he is obviously a very capable guy or he would not be where he is. I'm looking forward to seeing him in action.
