[Updated]
With less than 2 days to go, Apple has put up the banner for the Let's Talk iPhone event at the Town Hall auditorium at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, which is going to be the venue for the big media event.Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iPhone, a new entry level iPhone 4 and the new iPod product line. Apple is also expected to announce the release date for its next generation mobile operating system - iOS 5 and iCloud - its new cloud based service. There have been several speculations about Apple's decision to hold the event at the Town Hall auditorium at its headquarters rather than the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, which has been typically used for such big media events. Some believe that it is probably because Apple is only planning to launch iPhone 4S and not a redesigned iPhone 5, while some feel that Apple's new CEO Tim Cook who will be presiding over the event is more comfortable with the venue. According to Packowski of AllThingsD the reason for the potential change in venue was probably because the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like YBCA.Checkout the photo of the banner that has been put up at the Town Hall auditorium:
The banner reminded us that we didn't delve over the invitation last time round. At times Apple has used the invite to give us cryptic hints as to what it is going to announce at this event. So here's what we think Apple is trying to tell us - the phrase "Let's Talk iPhone" on the invite seems to suggest that Apple will be introducing its revolutionary new feature Assistant that will be powered by Siri’s impressive artificial intelligence and assistant technology and Nuance’s speech recognition technology. The graphics of the invitation/banner also shows iOS icons for Calendar, Clock, Maps, and Phone, which clearly says that Apple will be holding an event at the Town Hall auditorium at its headquarters in Cupertino, California (the Maps icon) at 10:00 am (the Clock app) on October 4th (the Calendar icon) to launch the new iPhone (the Phone icon). The "1" badge on the Phone icon is intriguing, it seems to suggest that Apple will launch only one new iPhone model (iPhone 4S or redesigned iPhone 5 along with the cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 as the new entry level model replacing iPhone 3GS) at the event and not two new iPhone models as some reports have claimed.Update:We thought we had nailed it, but reader Ziximo provides another perspective, he comments:I think it refers to 1 phone. But that means “world phone” so 1 phone to cover all the possible networks.I reckon there’ll be a iPhone 5 and a cheaper version of the iPhone 4He is probably spot on about the "1" badge on the Phone icon.Let us know what you think in the comments and don't forget to checkout our article on the new features and improvements that we can expect from the fifth generation iPhone.[image via 9 to 5 Mac]TweetRelated PostsiPhone 5 Media Event To Be Held On Apple’s Campus?Apple Holding Media Event On October 4th To Unveil iPhone 5Breaking News: Apple To Give Sneak Peak Of iPhone OS 4.0 On April 8Apple’s Photo Stream Feature Confirms Redesigned iPhone 5 With Larger Screen, Rectangular Home Button? I would have thought the ’1' meant ‘One New Message’ in relation to to the event, rather than only one phone.
October 03, 2011 at 9:46 AM ReplyHope your right, it would not be good if they just announce an iPhone 4s.
October 03, 2011 at 10:01 AM ReplyYa- “oh, and 1 more thing”
October 03, 2011 at 3:54 PM ReplyA cheaper iPhone is a good move for apple, as a lot of people don’t have the iPhone because of the price. But not releasing a redesigned iPhone could be a bad move, although, most people I know, including myself are perfectly happy with iPhone 4. I’m more excited about ios5, as I’m running beta now and it’s fantastic, the only thin I’ll miss is the new assistant feature.
October 03, 2011 at 10:11 AM ReplyThe iphone 3gs is only $50… most phones are more expensive than that. It may be outdated but in the end it can still run almost all the same apps the iphone 4 can. Most people only use they’re smart phone for email, Facebook, and texting anyway.
October 03, 2011 at 10:52 AM ReplyI think “1? is their belief on the IQ of people trying to read too much into what the one means….
October 03, 2011 at 10:12 AM ReplyBest answer yet!
October 03, 2011 at 11:34 AM ReplyI think it must be an Iphone 5, as the IOS is IOS5 when it went to 3GS it was still IOS3, Iphone 4 IOS4 etc etc…..
just my 2 pence worth
October 03, 2011 at 10:12 AM ReplyActually 3G to 3GS was 2.0 – 3.0
October 03, 2011 at 6:12 PM ReplyI think it refers to 1 phone. But that means “world phone” so 1 phone to cover all the possible networks.
I reckon there’ll be a iPhone 5 and a cheaper version of the iPhone 4
October 03, 2011 at 10:21 AM ReplyHey Ziximo, you have nailed it.
October 03, 2011 at 11:37 AM Replyspot on ziximo…
Apple will launch a REDESIGNED IPHONE….
The excitement is insane, lets see what Apple pulls out.
October 03, 2011 at 1:54 PM ReplyCan’t wait!!!
October 03, 2011 at 2:29 PM ReplyWould be good I’d it covered all 3G and 4G networks
Can’t wait until tomorrow
October 03, 2011 at 2:47 PM ReplyThe 1 means 1 phone to rule them all. As in it only does everything. WOW did I just steal that from PS3. Hey if it fits why not wear it.

iPhone has already use the software-based technique to stabilize the video recording, but the result is not good enough. Apple may switch to use the built-in gyroscope and accelerometer to improve further. Both of them would be able to provide motion data, and Apple can make use of them.
Would this feature available in iPhone 5? I hope so.
[via AppleInsider]

There has been no shortage of news, opinions, or rumors circulating about the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S, or whatever the next iPhone will be called). Yet despite all the noise about the next iPhone, most people have no idea what Apple will be announcing tomorrow.
Apple has kept the details of tomorrow’s announcement secret, but in a nutshell there are two main possibilities:
iPhone 5: Apple announces a groundbreaking new iPhone with major innovations. The hardware looks much different, and there are many needed improvements, plus impressive new features that no one anticipated.iPhone 4S: Another possibility is that the next iPhone could be not-so-next-generation, and simply add some improvements such as a better processor, more storage, and only slight hardware modifications. The iPhone 4S would be to the iPhone 4 what the iPhone 3GS was to the iPhone 3G.I consider the second scenario to be more likely, though I welcome the first.
It is also possible that Apple chooses a middle-ground between the above two scenarios and introduces a modestly improved iPhone — one that is faster and more spacious, has a similar hardware design, but has one major, game-changing feature that will set it apart from other smartphones.
It’s possible the next iPhone will be called something other than iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, but I consider the above situations to be the most likely scenarios for the iPhone announcement tomorrow.
Some possible features to be announced tomorrow:
4G network-compatibilityImproved camera, more megapixelsFaster processorMore storage space1080P video recordingSprint availabilityA larger screenThinner bodyWhat do you think Apple will announce tomorrow? Do you plan to buy the next iPhone?

Well the cat's just about out of the clear plastic shrink-wrap bag on the iPhone 4S. Giz Brazil had exclusive photos of Apple's new iPhone 4S over the weekend, and now Vodafone Germany's listed the iPhone 4S and a new 8GB iPhone 4 on its official site.
The Vodafone site lists 16, 32, and 64GB models of the iPhone 4S, and 8, 16 and 32GB models of the iPhone 4 on multiple accessory pages. We've heard about the 8GB iPhone 4 previously, and of course the 64GB iPhone has been rumored for years. With iPhone Day coming tomorrow, this seems like it's probably a little more than gum flapping and guesstimating by Vodafone, but it could just as easily be a dummy listing installed ahead of tomorrow to reduce the turnaround on getting the new iPhones' pages live. For what it's worth, though, the page does mention that the bumper for the iPhone 4 will work with the 4S.
So there it is: maybe-probably-hopefully a huge iPhone 4S and an eeny-weeny iPhone 4. Either of those get any of you guys hot and bothered? [MacRumors via TheNextWeb]

Sprint Nextel has entered into a multi-year deal with Apple as part of its agreement to carry the iPhone that will see the number three U.S. carrier purchase a guaranteed number of iPhones over the next four years. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint has agreed to purchase 30.5 million iPhones—$20 billion worth, at current rates—over the next four years whether or not it is able to sell them all. “This is a bet-the-company kind of thing,’’ said a person familiar with the company’s decision making, adding that the projected hit to the company’s operating income is “staggering.” According to the report, Apple also requires other carriers to make long-term volume commitments for the iPhone, which in turn helps them in component purchasing decisions. The report notes that Sprint is expected to offer unlimited data plans for the iPhone, distinguishing it from rival carriers Verizon and AT&T, and that the deal isn’t expected to become profitable until 2014. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse recently said that the lack of the iPhone is “the No. 1 reason customers leave or switch.”

When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is tomorrow's hardware announcements.
During last night's Talkcast, the TUAW family was split over their predictions. One of us felt that Apple would limit themselves tomorrow to a single iPhone model. Others disagreed. Strongly. Here's how our guesses broke down.
The Lord of the Rings: Erica felt there would be only one phone to rule them all, with more RAM, an A5 chip, better internals and possibly more sensors -- all powering new user features. She didn't care whether it was called a 4S or 5, but felt it likely would follow the current case shape.
Twins: Doc Rock theorized that Apple would introduce two models: a fully powered Schwartzenegger version and a lower-cost DeVito model, offering a bargain-basement intro price. Steve and Kelly jumped on the Twins-scenario bandwagon as well.
Austin Powers: Mike Rose posited that we'd see a variation of the Twins approach, but that the inexpensive mini-me phone (likely an 8GB iPhone 4, an alternative of the DeVito, but not a truly new unit) would be sold out-of contract, as a standalone multi-carrier device at a rock-bottom price.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: One other theory floated during the talkcast was about the iPod touch. We suggested that Apple might discontinue the iPod touch as we know it and re-introduce it with 3G capabilities, much as the iPad offers. The iPod touch would be taken over and assimilated into the iPhone family in addition to a new 4S or 5.
So those are how our theories broke down according to movie genre. Agree? Disagree? You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.

Welcome to Ask TUAW, our weekly (mostly) question-and-answer column. We're nearing the release of iOS 5, iCloud, iTunes Match and the next version of the iPhone.
We get to as many questions as we can, so head down to the comments and tell us what Apple/Mac/iOS questions keep you up at night. If you'd prefer, instead of asking questions in the comments, you can email your questions directly to ask@tuaw.com, or simply ping us on Twitter.
For our first question, Ryan asks:
I have a quick question, about moving from MobileMe to iCloud. I heard Apple will not support Keychain syncing via iCloud to multiple Macs. I know i can use 1Password, or Dropbox or rsync (yikes), but I loveeee things as is. Do you know if this is true, and if, so, if there is a seamless work around? I have been putting off transitioning to iCloud just for this exact reason.
Ryan, unfortunately, you're right. With iCloud, Apple is killing off the Keychain and bookmark portions of MobileMe sync, along with iDisk and MobileMe webpages. Now, portions of MobileMe will continue to be available for existing MobileMe users through June 30, 2012 -- but not sync. Here's the relevant portion of Apple's FAQ on the MobileMe-to-iCloud transition:
What happens to the other sync services I use for my Mac?
Syncing of Mac Dashboard widgets, keychains, Dock items, and System Preferences will not be part of iCloud, but will continue to be available for you to use until you move to iCloud. After you move to iCloud or after June 30, 2012, whichever comes first, those sync services will no longer be available. Other MobileMe services that are not transitioning to iCloud (iWeb publishing, Gallery, and iDisk) will continue to be available through June 30, 2012, even after you move to iCloud.
Once you "upgrade" your MobileMe account to iCloud, you will completely lose to your keychain sync. There is no seamless workaround, though 1Password + Dropbox is an excellent, if slightly less user-friendly, alternative.
It has been reported that Apple is "open" to returning those features if there is enough feedback on the subject. If you feel strongly about retaining Keychain Sync, drop Tim Cook an email. His address is tcook@apple.com.
Bayuze writes:
I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro Mid-2009 13" battery. I just noticed the "service battery" on the drop down menu below the battery icon. Looking at the details it says I have been through 911 cycles. I have AppleCare due to expire next year and thought they would replace it for me but on reading the fine print, it says only defective batteries will be replaced and mine seems to be a case of just normal wear and tear (I think). Just in case AppleCare can't replace it and I have to do this myself what is/are the best places to get a good replacement battery? I think iFixit has a good guide on the replacement. Any other tips would be welcome!
You can replace the battery yourself fairly easily, but it will void your AppleCare warranty if you do. And honestly, the price of the battery itself is only about $10 to $20 cheaper than bringing your Mac into an Apple Store and having them replace it for you.
That having been said, I wouldn't take AppleCare at their word that your battery is experiencing "normal wear and tear". According to Apple's own specs, your battery is supposed to retain around 80 percent of its factory-fresh capacity after 1000 full charge-discharge cycles. If you're getting a "service battery" warning after 911 cycles, it means there's something physically wrong with your battery when there shouldn't be.
Chris Rawson here at TUAW had to do this dance with AppleCare last year over his battery, and I documented how I got it replaced for free -- try pushing your case with AppleCare (nicely), and you may get better results than you expected.
Also, your typical Genius Bar employee can replace the battery, even if you are outside the 1-year "lifespan" of the battery -- especially if the battery is reporting an internal failure, as yours is.
Gregg wonders:
Since the iPhone hit the market, countless numbers of people have been asking for an app that would block a phone number. You would have to think that if that many people where searching for an app to perform a task on their iPhones there would a massive amount of money to be made by a developer and by Apple itself. And yet after all this time, there's nothing in the app store.
Is there something that's is going unspoken to the public, something perhaps like an agreement with phone service providers and Apple? Is it possible that an app like this would be to difficult to create? I find it suspiciously puzzling?
An external app to block a phone number will never exist, at least not for an unjailbroken iPhone. Phone calls are handled directly by the phone app on the iPhone, and cannot be intercepted or highjacked by an app, even with such noble intentions as blocking unwanted callers.
However, if you are an AT&T customer, you can purchase AT&T Smart Limits for $4.99/month, a parental controls feature that allows users to block up to 30 numbers from making incoming or outgoing calls or sending or receiving text messages.
Verizon Wireless customers can block up to five numbers, by following the instructions on this page for activating Verizon's Spam Controls. Google Voice users can also redirect or block numbers as well.
If you are receiving harassing or disturbing phone calls, we encourage you to get in touch with your local law enforcement officials and file a complaint.
Adam writes:
With every photo you take & file you update on your phone syncing to all devices via the iCloud, will this mean you'll be often going over your network data allowance without realising?
Very doubtful. Apple has been very good about separating Wi-Fi usage from 3G usage. The iCloud backup function only activates when the iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. Photo Stream also only uploads and downloads iCloud photos when connected to Wi-Fi.
Roger wonders:
My wife and I both have Macbooks upgraded to Lion using a common AppleID. Will we be able to keep our emails, address books, calendars and files from cross populating on each others Macs once iCloud goes live?
We both really like our own space, but would like to share the Lion update.
If you are sharing an AppleID in iCloud, your address books and calendars will be cross-pollinated -- if you enable iCloud syncing of those items. Your email and files shouldn't be affected. One option is to create separate calendars and address book groups for you and your wife. This would allow you to use the one AppleID and (sort of) keep your data separate.
On the other hand, if you -- or your wife -- use a separate AppleID for iCloud across your MacBook, iPad and iPhone, you will be able to keep all your information separate, but your purchases will be separate too.
Apple has designed iCloud so that each person has their own AppleID, for both purchases and personal information like addresses and calendars. Things tend to go a little awry when users try to share them.
I'd wait until iCloud comes out and check out the details -- we don't quite know how everything is going to work yet.
Anyway, thanks for the questions everyone, and we need yours too! So, ask away in the comments, or shoot us an email at ask@tuaw.com. Also, if you have anything to add to our answers, we love feedback and fresh ideas.
Seriously, we want questions! Now, have a great week!

Although you can't clearly see Scott Forstall's deranged face on this drawing, everything in this graphic showing the mechanics of Apple's next iPhone event—starring Tim Cook as master of ceremonies—is true.
Having been there a few times, I can attest that this is all true. There are also robotic ninja fembots with titanium shuriken-nippled breasts, but you can't see them in the drawing because they are hidden. [Joy of Tech]

The first time I mentioned Abilene Christian University, it was because it was handing out iPhones to students. The next time was a year later when I followed up with an interview about the school's methods and research findings. Its approach to incorporating technology into education was both unobtrusive and highly effective, and it almost made me want to go back to school again. This year, as Mike Rose mentioned a little while ago, the studies go on and the results continue to impress.
Now that the iPad is available, students are being equipped with a rich set of tools that can be used for learning; they can also be used to spend time on social networks, blogging, chatting with friends... all with ACU's blessing. There are no mandates that either teachers or students have to use the iPads. The fact that the iPad is as much a social tool as anything else is something that ACU has embraced, modifying many of its curriculums to work more effectively with the new technology.
Among the students, the approval rating for the program is in the upper 90%, with the highest numbers coming from the youngest classes (100% for the class of 2015). Test scores have been shown to improve markedly (+25%) when notes are taken and texts annotated using the iPad. The numbers are all great, but that's not what really catches my attention about this story.
What's most interesting to me is how the professors at ACU have voluntarily adapted their teaching styles to work with new technologies. The administration has provided all of the tools for a highly social, highly connected environment, and teachers and students alike have taken impressive advantage of the opportunities. The curriculum, as well, has been shifting to include rich media creation as part of everyday learning.
Obviously, the iPad isn't making the difference alone. It's a conduit, a tool for taking advantage of the Internet, a network of friends and a new way of looking at education. Well, not new, really. Thoreau's classroom is in full effect here. In many classes students are interactively building the syllabus, creating the questions and finding the answers. The professors are taking on a new role as "coaches," focusing more on helping students learn to solve problems and answer questions than on rote learning and testing. Some professors have stopped traditional lecturing entirely, and have seen improved comprehension and test results across the board.
In one class at ACU, students spend their class-time in the surrounding communities, armed with iPads, doing service work and solving real-world problems. They are asked to blog their experiences as they happen. Images, thoughts, discoveries and more are all captured in blog form, and the blog ultimately becomes the test.
As an Apple fan, I'm thrilled that the iPad--and the iPhone before it--were chosen to be the center of this program. The technology (including a media creation studio donated by AT&T) shines brightly in this scenario. Without the active support of students, their teachers and the administration, though, the technology would just be a hindrance while the status quo was maintained. It's inspiring to see education taking what is, in my opinion, a very positive leap forward at ACU.

When Apple launches the next generation iPhone at the Let's talk iPhone event tomorrow, Apple is also expected to introduce an 8GB iPhone 4, which will be the new entry level iPhone that will be available for $99, replacing two generations old iPhone 3GS.But we're hearing murmors that Apple may not discontinue iPhone 3GS tomorrow and instead offer the 8GB iPhone 3GS for free with a two-year contract.Back in June, RBC Capital Markets General Manager Mike Abramsky predicted that Apple will offer iPhone 3GS for free with a 2-year contract, when it launches iPhone 5.Apple is expected to finally offer the phone for free in an effort to aggressively attack mid-market smartphone buyers and counter Android’s momentum. Abramsky sees this move more than doubling Apple’s global addressable market to 150 million smartphones, up from 64 million, and it will drastically accelerate Apple’s growth outside North America. In the U.S., this of course begs the question, how will Verizon Wireless stay competitive with AT&T? Apple does not currently offer a CDMA iPhone 3GS, so the carrier would be unable to match AT&T with mid-market customers.Apple usually drops the price of the previous generation iPhone to $99 (iPhone 3GS is currently available for $49 with a contract) and sells the new iPhone for $199 and $299. So based on Abramsky, iPhone 3GS will be available for free and continue to be the entry level iPhone, followed by iPhone 4 for $99 and iPhone 5 for $199 and $299 respectively with a two-year contract.Abramsky noted that AT&T's $15 data plan with a free iPhone with a two year contract would be an attractive option for customers looking to buy an iPhone on a budget. Some reports have also suggested that Apple could offer iPhone 3GS without a contract (basically an unlocked iPhone 3GS) for $349 to target the price sensitive prepaid market with the launch of the fifth generation iPhone.
Is that the reason iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 3GS? We won't have to wait too long to find out, but a free iPhone 3GS with a 2-year contract or an unsubsidised one for $349 does sound like a good idea to us. right on, Apple! $349 w/out contract is what I
need..That’s the model I’ve had for two years. It does everything I need an iPhone to do, despite having all the latest gidgets/gadgets.
My original iPhone 8GB is pretty much used for Angry Birds marathons–the battery lasts forever!
I think the 3GS is about $450 outright here now. Would be good if it gets cheaper so more ppl can get there hands on one

Recently, someone figured out that if they changed just one little number in the code for the iPhone Facebook app, the iPad app would be revealed when installed on the iPad. You needed to be jailbroken so you could access the Facebook app files to change the code that marks the app for the iPhone or iPad. The app was a little buggy but the layout was pretty good. Nothing to blow your mind but better than the tiny little iPhone app. UPDATE: There is a hack in Cydia called FaceForward that re-enables the hack and doesn’t require the step by step hacks below!

It probably won’t work again anytime soon but if they give back access here’s how to hack it:
1. You must be jailbroken.
2. Install iFile on your iPad so you can edit the Facebook application files. It’s free in Cydia.
3. Install the iPhone Facebook app on your iPad. It’s free in the App Store.
4. Open iFile and navigate to Applications/Facebook/Facebook.app/Info.plist
5. Tap on Info.plist and either use Text Viewer or Property List Viewer and change UIDeviceFamily to 2 instead of 1.
6. Reboot iPad.
Here’s a few screenshots I grabbed before it stopped working:

It’s extremely easy to use more than 2GB 3G data per month, especially when you use the smartphones. Verizon offers unlimited 3G data plan at iPhone 4 launch, but now those users who use too much data would be affected. The data speed would be reduced when you are connected 3G at a congested site. Verizon said around the percentage of the users is around 5%.
Verizon now recommends users to switch to 4G LTE phones. Since there are no 4G iPhone yet, does that mean people should not use iPhone and switch to 4G smartphones?

Want to upgrade your iPad 2 to the latest iOS 4.3.5?
Below you can download iOS 4.3.0 through 4.3.5 for the Apple iPad 2 via direct downloads links.
To download any available firmware for your iPad 2 (CDMA / GSM / Wi-Fi) simply scroll down until you see the appropriate iOS version that you want and click on it (actually you should right click on it and select to save the file on your computer – otherwise iTunes will probably automatically open it).

Most tech companies don’t want to launch anything next week. It’s because they know media will just focus on the Apple’s new products and forget anything else. Still, there is an exception. Adobe has announced they will announce new things at October 4th 10am, which is clearly the same time as Apple’s “Let’s talk iPhone” event.
We are not sure whether this is a coincidences or not.
